Frances Tiafoe explains why he dominates in Louis Armstrong Stadium at US Open

Frances Tiafoe continued his US Open run on Sunday afternoon with a straight set win over No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. It was one of the best, cleanest matches the No. 11-ranked Tiafoe has ever played, and continued his long-running dominance of Louis Armstrong Stadium at the US Open.

With his win on Sunday, Tiafoe is now 10-0 all-time at Louis Armstrong, including a perfect 4-0 in this year’s tournament.

His run of dominance there has prompted him to keep requesting matches at the Open’s No. 2 show court.

He might soon be out of luck as he goes deeper into the tournament, and starts to play his way into the top-billing at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

So what’s behind Tiafoe’s dominance at Louis Armstrong?

He seems to just love the vibes of the place.

Following his win on Sunday, Tiafoe was asked about his secret to dominating at Armstrong and started off by simply, “you hear the noise .. you hear the noise.”

He then went on to call it “the people’s court,” while adding that he is loving the energy the crowd gives and that he can feed off of when he plays there.

It is not uncommon for players to enjoy playing at Armstrong as opposed to Arthur Ashe because it not only produces a more intimate and energetic atmosphere due to the smaller size and closer fans, but it also seems to attract a different sort of crowd.

While Ashe typically draws celebrities, influencers and casual tennis fans that just want to see the biggest stars, Armstrong matches tend to draw the more hardcore tennis fans that are simply there to see the matches.

The decorum that has been on display from fans at several high-profile matches this year has become a big talking point, and it has no doubt been a distraction for players.

Tiafoe has said in the past he enjoys the lack of luxury suites at Armstrong and the fact it draws in fans that care more about the results.

Tiafoe will move on to face fellow American Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

He is still seeking his first ever Grand Slam title. The U.S. Open has been by far his most successful of the Grand Slam events, reaching the semifinals on two previous occasions (2022 and 2024). It is the only Grand Slam event where he has been able to get through the quarterfinals. He is one win away from doing it again. At some point, though, he is going to have to get away from his comfort zone and get a win outside of Louis Armstrong Stadium.
