Our elderly president has the mind of a petulant adolescent with no impulse control, and his weirdness was on full display in the last few days when he unleashed a spray of immature social media posts and memes that, among other things, portrayed him as a hockey player beating up the Canadian prime minister, pictured him at his desk pushing a button to unleash a couple of nuclear explosions and, less violently, calling for New Mexico to be renamed “New America.”
“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA,” President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, employing his standard claim that this is a subject on the minds of “many people,” when, in fact, it is just another bizarre mental hiccup that is his alone.
Trump paired his post with a fake, AI-produced video of him switching a New Mexico roadside billboard to the new name and dancing to his curiously-chosen theme song, “YMCA.” (Has anyone mentioned to Trump, the chosen one for many evangelical Christians, that it’s a gay anthem?)
Trump seems obsessed with name changes. At the beginning of his second term in the White House, he ordered that the Gulf of Mexico be called the Gulf of America forevermore. And, last week, amid his disastrous trade war with Canada, he declared that Lake Ontario shall, henceforth, be named Lake America.
He has even toyed with the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz, changing it to, you guessed it, the Strait of America.
Isn’t it a comfort knowing that our president, who has declared himself greater than Washington or Lincoln, is laser-focused on his social media output and engaged in a name game that “many people” believe will make “America” ubiquitous, if not great again?
