Billy Crystal Reveals What He Found In His Home’s Ruins

Billy Crystal lost the Pacific Palisades home where he and his wife, Janice, had spent 46 years building a life, but one small discovery among the ruins gave the family something to hold on to.

After the January 2025 wildfires reduced their house to rubble, the actor found a garden rock bearing a single word that had shaped his life long before the disaster.

Now, Crystal is turning that devastating experience into a stage production rooted in grief, family and resilience.

When Billy Crystal returned to the property roughly a week after the fires, the destruction was almost impossible to comprehend.

The couple bought their 1930s ranch house in 1979 and raised their daughters, Jenny and Lindsay, there. Instead of the familiar neighborhood, Crystal encountered a landscape of charred trees, standing chimneys and debris scattered through empty streets.

“All you could see were skeletons of trees and chimneys, the ones that hadn’t fallen, stuff blowing in the streets, nobody around,” the 78-year-old told PEOPLE. “It was like an episode of The Walking Dead, like this thing had just come through and wiped out everything.”

As Crystal, Janice and their daughters surveyed what remained, Lindsay noticed a garden rock that had survived the blaze.

Its engraved message read “Laughter,” a word carrying decades of personal meaning for the comedian. At 15, Crystal had lost his father and tried to help his grieving mother rebuild her life by keeping her laughing.

“When I was 15, being there with a grieving mother and watching her put her life back together at 49, my job was to keep her laughing,” Crystal recalled, adding, “That word made my life possible. So the fact that was the first thing [we found], we’ll be okay.”

The family had little time to prepare when the fires threatened their neighborhood on January 7, 2025. Billy Crystal and Janice woke to helicopters, emergency vehicles, and smoke before television coverage showed residents fleeing for their lives.

As the blaze expanded at a frightening pace, they realized they needed to leave. Their evacuation was hurried, and the belongings they chose reflected what mattered most.

“We took photo albums, wedding albums, photographs of our parents’ weddings. So that’s what we had and the clothes we were wearing, thinking we’ll be back in a day,” Crystal recalled.

They went to Jenny’s house, where relatives gathered virtually and in person as the family watched the news and waited for updates.

Their security cameras initially showed embers flying around the property before going dark. Meanwhile, familiar businesses and everyday landmarks disappeared from the coverage, bringing the danger closer to home.

The following morning, they still had no confirmation of the house’s fate. Then a neighbor called, crying hysterically, to deliver the news: “It’s gone.”

The surviving rock became an unexpected connection between the comedian’s childhood grief and the destruction of his family home.

He began writing “860,” a one-man show named after the property’s street address, using memories from his life and career to work through what had happened.

“It wasn’t just, ‘Oh, I’m going to make a play out of this,’ ” he explained. “No, it was healing me at the same time.”

His longtime friend Rob Reiner, whom Crystal called “the friend of a lifetime,” encouraged him as he developed the production.

However, the year brought another devastating loss: Reiner and his wife, Michele, were murdered 11 months after the fires.

Crystal had previously explored bereavement in his Tony-winning show “700 Sundays,” which centered on growing up on Long Island and losing his father to a heart attack. This time, he said, the pain remained immediate.

“The pain of those moments was a little further removed,” he reflected. “This is still fresh and still ongoing.”

The grief Billy Crystal experienced after losing his home and his longtime friend Reiner also affected his relationship with God.

As The Blast reported, the filmmaker appeared on the October 11 episode of “CBS Sunday Morning,” where he admitted that the events of 2025 had changed how he viewed his faith.

When asked whether his relationship with God had helped him through the painful period, Crystal answered, “No, ’cause I don’t trust him.”

The comedian elaborated on that feeling, saying, “Too many bad things have happened; the earth is in bad shape. This is a weird, scary time. So no, not anymore.”

The admission marked a change for Crystal, whose 2004 Tony Award-winning one-man show, “700 Sundays,” included conversations with God and explored his relationship with his late father.

Despite his disillusionment, however, the comedian said he remained hopeful about what lay ahead. “I feel really good, and I’m optimistic for what life is going to bring,” he shared.

While Crystal was struggling with the aftermath of his losses, a conversation with Reiner shortly before the director’s death took on new significance.

During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Crystal recalled attending Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party with Reiner the night before he and his wife, Michele, were killed in December 2025.

The friends discussed changes in Hollywood and the uncertainty surrounding a film’s success. The deceased filmmaker reminded Crystal that the experience of making a movie mattered more than its eventual reception.

“And we talked about the fact that you can’t control how a movie is going to do. What you can control is the experience of making it,” Crystal recalled per The Blast.

Reiner also spoke about the lasting importance of the people he had worked with, telling Crystal that those shared experiences were what stayed with someone. Crystal carried that message with him after his friend’s death.
