Biggest question facing Brewers, Rays heading into World Series

After a memorable 2026 Major League Baseball season, two franchises with zero World Series titles between them will meet in a Fall Classic that could be decided by which rotation’s biggest question gets the most unfavorable answer.

Biggest question facing Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series

Let’s start with Tampa Bay, because the Rays’ question is simple: can two men carry a rotation through seven games?

Drew Rasmussen and Freddy Peralta have started five of the Rays’ seven postseason wins. Rasmussen owns a 1.29 ERA and 0.76 WHIP across 21 October innings, with quality starts in all three of his outings, including eight shutout innings against the New York Yankees in the ALDS. Peralta was just named ALCS MVP after allowing one earned run in 12 innings against the Cleveland Guardians. They are, right now, the two most efficient pitchers on the planet.

And they will very likely open Games 1 and 2 in Milwaukee, inside the ballpark where both debuted and pitching against the franchise that traded them both away.

However, here’s the problem for the Rays. A seven-game series doesn’t care about your two best. It asks about your third starter, your fourth starter and how much is left in the first two when they come back around. Behind Tampa’s aces is Nick Martinez. He has been solid with a 3.00 ERA in nine innings this postseason, but he’s not the kind of arm that silences a lineup the third time through.

Rasmussen and Peralta are also carrying the heaviest workloads of their careers. If the Brewers stretch this series to six or seven games, Tampa Bay’s two-ace model gets stress-tested like it hasn’t been all month.

Biggest question facing the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series

Milwaukee’s question is the mirror image: can the Brewers keep winning without their aces pitching like aces?

Let’s talk about something that has gone somewhat under the radar throughout Milwaukee’s October romp…Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson have not had their best stuff. Luckily for Milwaukee, it hasn’t mattered.

The bullpen, buoyed by Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe, Trevor Megill and DL Hall, has been almost untouchable, and the lineup keeps finding the big hit. Milwaukee swept the Dodgers without once needing Misiorowski to be the fire-balling NL Cy Young Award winner he’s about to become.

Tampa Bay, however, is the worst possible matchup for that formula. The Rays don’t strike out. They foul off pitches, work counts and grind at-bats. That’s exactly the approach designed to get into a bullpen early and make it work for seven straight games. Milwaukee’s plan could also include a bullpen game in Game 4 inside the Tropicana Dome, much like the Brewers did against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. This time, though, it could be a problem against a patient Tampa Bay lineup.

So what’s the bottom line for this Fall Classic? Tampa Bay is betting everything on two arms. Milwaukee is relying on depth and plenty of pitchers, none of whom must be perfect. Both philosophies have held up all October, but one of them will likely break during the World Series.

On the surface, the Rays’ margin for success is thinner. If Peralta and Rasmussen each give Tampa Bay one gem in Milwaukee, this is a series. If either one finally runs out of gas, Milwaukee’s first championship seems inevitable.
