Philadelphia 76ers forward LeBron James is a spectacle who attracts attention wherever he goes. The NBA quickly put his new team into the spotlight upon his free-agency decision, matching Philadelphia up with the defending champion New York Knicks on opening night.
There couldn’t be a bigger draw in basketball than one of the greatest players ever competing in the mecca of basketball on the first night of the season.
It isn’t often that James is seen getting into altercations with fans, but things changed on Tuesday night. Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson was at the line shooting free throws when cameras caught the 22-time All-Star shouting back and forth with a fan.
It’s unclear what was said between the two parties, but it must have been infuriating enough for James to respond.
Despite his banter with the fans, James has still been productive, putting up 11 points, four rebounds and five assists at the time of this writing. Knicks fans are a notoriously rowdy bunch, so it will be intriguing to see if they can draw another reaction from the all-time great.
James wanted to play in New York prior to its title win back in June and lives there part time, so it’s strange to see him arguing with fans already. But he has had a giant target in his back since he entered the league, and it doesn’t look like things will change until he’s gone.
The 76ers will see the Knicks three more times this season, and possibly more if they meet in the playoffs, so there will be plenty more opportunities for fans to heckle James. Now, it’s time to see if he will respond with his play on the court.
