Season 3 Of The ‘Night Court’ Reboot Is On Its Way

The hilarious reboot of the popular 80s series returns tonight on NBC. With the new season comes the departure of a fan favorite and the addition of another.

On the day the Night Court reboot was officially renewed for Season 3, actress India de Beaufort announced that she would be departing the sitcom.

TVLine reported the news earlier this year with a statement from deBeaufort fondly expressing her appreciation for the opportunity of being on the show.

“For the last two years, I have had the immense privilege of driving onto the WB lot and walking onto a stage filled with the [hardest] working, loving and talented cast and crew that comedy has to offer,” deBeaufort, who played the conniving yet (secretly) kind ADA Olivia Moore, shared.

“Today they received a [Season 3] pick up,” deBeaufort continued. “Knowing and loving them as I do, I am beyond overjoyed for the most deserving people I know. I will miss the honor of being in their brilliant company, but my god. That was fun. My time at Night Court has come to an end.”

deBeaufort’s departure follows that of Night Court, Season 1 co-star Kapil Talwalkar as court clerk Neil, who was being set up as a love interest for the show’s lead actress, Melissa Rauch (Judge Abby Stone). This news was also reported by TVLine.

As audiences say goodbye to India deBeaufort, sitcom veteran Wendie Malick has been fully upped to a series regular after her past appearances on Night Court.

NBC shares that Malick will be reprising the role of Julianne Waters, the mentally unstable ex of public defender Dan Fielding, played by OG Night Court star John Larroquette.

Juliette initially reentered Dan’s life in Season 1 to cause ruin after he prosecuted her in the past. During a one-off appearance in Season 2, she was arrested for setting a fire after she managed to fall for a costumed Dan’s charms during a Halloween party (she was unaware Dan was behind the mask).

Not only is she free at the start of Night Court season 3, but Juliette has since been secretly hired by Abby as the new prosecutor following Olivia’s exit.

In a sneak peek of the upcoming season, Malick remarks how open and friendly the Night Court cast has been to her since her addition.

“These guys were so incredibly generous and welcoming to me,” she shared. “Everyone has made me feel so right at home from the very beginning.”

An early criticism of the Night Court reboot, which premiered in 2023, was the lack of odd cases and criminals that were prominent in the original 80s version.

Season 2 improved on this, as Decider noted, focusing less on the mundane lives of the show’s main players and more on the madness and chaos that allowed the OG series to run for an impressive 9 seasons, from 1984 to 1992. Season 3 of the Night Court reboot looks to keep this momentum going, as seen in a clip from an upcoming episode when Judge Stone looks over a case involving literal clowns.

Actor Nyambi Nyambi, who was brought on as the new court clerk Wyatt in Season 2, is looking forward to what shenanigans may occur in the upcoming season.

“I’m excited to see what zany, crazy cases happen,” he stated in an interview.

Season 2 of Night Court ended with the wedding of a beloved character from the original series and the reveal of someone possibly being a new parent, albeit some decades after their potential child was born.

After residing over the same-sex nuptials of original bailiff Roz Russell (with actress Marsha Warfield returning to the role), Abby met her new boyfriend’s mother, Susan, for the first time. During their introduction, Susan mentions that Jake, her son and Abby’s boyfriend, was the result of a short fling with an unnamed Night Court employee.

The camera then pans over to Jake (Ryan Hansen) sitting next to Dan and absentmindedly mirroring the elder Fielding’s actions.

NBC promises fans they’ll find out the results of that on-screen paternity question in Season 3, with actress Julia Duffy returning to the series as Jake’s mom, Susan.
