State budget: Don’t forsake older, vulnerable adults

Our state lawmakers are up against the kind of budget challenge that none of us should envy. I am grateful for their hard work to balance the needs of all Washingtonians.

As someone employed for over 30 years in Washington state long-term care, I know firsthand that state dollars are critical to care for our state’s older and vulnerable adults. As our representatives consider what can stay and what can go in the state budget, I encourage them to consider the aging individuals whom we support with their most basic daily needs.

For example, at Parkside Retirement we have successfully transitioned, supported and maintained individuals in the community who have historically had few placement options. Our comprehensive skilled services support residents with community housing choices and their ongoing support, stability and safe integration within our communities. Our successful program empowers these individuals while providing reliability, stability and the most cost-effective use of tax dollars.

As our state considers where to retain investments during a year of cuts, I urge them to continue to prioritize the needs of those who rely on long-term care.

Tom Gallucci, executive director, Parkside Retirement Assisted Living, Auburn
