Travis Hunter puts foot down in position dispute

During the 2025 NFL Draft cycle, one of the biggest questions has been what position NFL teams will have Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter play in the pros. Hunter answered the question for them.

The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner recently told CBS Sports he plans to play cornerback and wide receiver and will take drastic action if his draft team tries to stop him.

“It’s never playing football again,” Hunter said.

“I’ve been doing it my whole life,” he added of his football career as a cornerback and wide receiver. “I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it.”

To Hunter’s point, according to ESPN, he played 1,461 total snaps last season, including 713 on offense and 748 on defense.

In 2024, Hunter was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and won several national honors, including the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the country’s best defensive player, and the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the country’s best wide receiver.

Hunter finished the season with 96 receptions, 1,258 receiving yards, 15 receiving touchdowns, 36 tackles (one for loss), 11 passes defended, four interceptions and a forced fumble.

Teams should be thrilled with his insistence on playing both positions. After all, anyone drafting near the top of the first round could use all the help it can get, and landing Hunter would be filling two holes for the price of one (at least until it’s time to negotiate a second contract).

Is Hunter a cornerback or wide receiver? That’s been one of the persistent questions throughout the pre-draft cycle. Hunter’s hard-line stance removes it from the equation.

Instead, it shifts the conversation. The question isn’t which position Hunter will play, but rather why his future team should want to limit him at all.
