What addition of QB Jake Garcia means for Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines have gone out and brought in another quarterback via the transfer portal.

According to Pete Nakos of On3, former East Carolina, Missouri and Miami quarterback Jake Garcia will play in Ann Arbor this fall.

Garcia started the season as the starter in 2024 for the Pirates, but he was replaced by early October. He threw for 1,426 yards and eight touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions. He also rushed for two touchdowns.

Garcia should in no way be looked at as a threat to freshman Bryce Underwood, who was the nation’s consensus No. 1 overall 2025 recruit.

Underwood is the likely starter for Michigan despite being a freshman. He’s apparently the real deal and has all the talent in the world to back up his recruiting ranking.

The Wolverines could decide to insulate Underwood from danger as a freshman and not play him, but he’s more than likely going to get the starting nod.

What that means is that Garcia is actually a threat to Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, who missed spring practice with an upper-body injury but is expected to be good to go by this fall. Keene was a grad transfer to Michigan who started 12 games as a senior for Fresno State last season while throwing for 2,892 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

Keene would be a strong veteran backup for Underwood, but now he’ll be competing for those QB2 reps with Garcia. Former starter Davis Warren (coming off an ACL injury), sophomore Jadyn Davis and true freshman Chase Herbstreit are also in Michigan’s quarterback room, but they’re all basically there in service of making sure Underwood looks good.
