How Corbin Carroll’s injury could impact Diamondbacks

DENVER — Corbin Carroll was not in the starting lineup for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night, and his continued absence with a hand injury could have a domino effect on the Arizona batting order on Sunday.

Carroll was hit on the left hand by a pitch on June 18 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays and has not been in the lineup since. Carroll and Arizona manager Torey Lovullo had a brief sit-down in Lovullo’s office on Saturday prior to the manager’s media session to discuss Carroll’s hand condition and what might come next.

“He’s improving, the hand is still not 100%,” Lovullo said of his All-Star outfielder. “He’s able to take some swings, but not feeling that he can do it appropriately. We’ll continue to monitor him throughout the course of the day.”

Lovullo went on to say that he considered Carroll “day-to-day.”

Ketel Marte is expected to get a day off on Sunday, but that plan may be scrapped if Carroll is still unavailable to play.

“We’ll see how today goes, but that’s the early forecast,” Lovullo said of the tentative Sunday plan to sit Marte. “They’re two of our best players so if one’s subbing out, you’d like to sub one in.”

“Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out, but the design is to get Ketel off his feet tomorrow.”

If Marte is pulled from the lineup on Sunday, the Diamondbacks will be sitting one of their hottest hitters. Marte tied his career high with five RBI on Friday night in a win over the Rockies, smacking his 13th home run of the season and adding a pair of doubles.

He continued his torrid hitting in Denver on Saturday with two doubles and a single in his first three at-bats.
