Popular rapper and TV personality Snoop Dogg has been under fire over the last week after comments he made about LGBTQ+ representation in movies went viral. The famous rapper, known for his hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” has sparked considerable controversy, prompting spirited responses from fans and even a writer from the “Lightyear” movie, about which he was ranting.

On Threads, a popular derivative of Instagram, Lauren Gunderson, who received a screenplay material credit on the 2022 Disney film, responded to Snoop’s unexpected comments about the movie featuring a gay couple.

“He sucks,” she wrote online. But that’s not all Gunderson had to say about the 53-year-old, who’s made headlines in the past over past problematic behavior.

In another post, the Pixar writer revealed how “bummed” she was to hear Snoop’s thoughts about the movie. “Hopefully he joins the side of Love,” she finished.

According to a previous report from The Blast, Snoop Dogg appeared on the “It’s Giving” podcast and slammed movie and TV creators for including too much queer representation in children’s products.

“They’re putting it everywhere! My grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop, how [does] she have a baby with a woman?’” Snoop Dogg said. “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh-t that I don’t have an answer for.”

Disney’s “Lightyear,” featuring a diverse range of characters from various backgrounds, isn’t much of a surprise, considering Karey Burke, president of Disney’s General Entertainment Content in 2022, stated that her plans for the company included expanding its content to become more inclusive.

“I’m here as a mother of two queer children, actually,” Burke previously said during a company-wide call. “One transgender child and one pansexual child, and also as a leader.”

Burke went on to explain how she was stunned to learn only a “handful” of Disney’s lead characters were queer.

“And I went, ‘What? That can’t be true,’” Burke said. “And I realized it actually is true. We have many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories and yet we don’t have enough leads and narratives in which gay characters just get to be characters and not have to be about gay stories.”

    Disney Fought Against Florida Bill

Amid this, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new bill into law that would ban Florida teachers from discussing LGBTQ+ topics, including sexual orientation or gender identity, with students unless they’re in the fourth grade or higher.

Disney fought back against the bill, issuing a statement that condemned the legislation for attempting to divide the community.

“Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that,” a Disney spokesperson said.

Fans Respond To Snoop Dogg’s Comments

Online, social media users flood different threads to share their heated responses to Snoop Dogg’s comments about LGBTQ+ people. One user questioned how he could be so concerned about negative influences on children, considering he’s built his career “rapping about gangs, crime, drugs, and violence.”

“But now he’s afraid by an animated film, just because it shows a same-sex couple together for less than 10 seconds?” the user finished.

Another user jumped into the conversation and declared Snoop Dogg has always been “homophobic.” According to @Demigloom on X, Snoop Dogg only became “pro-Gay when Obama legalized gay marriage to avoid backlash, and now it’s socially acceptable to hate gay people again so he just went back to how he always was.”

A third user stated that despite rocking with Snoop Dogg their entire life, “it’s f-ck you” now. “People exist,” they continued. “Representation exists and it’s vital to be shown. People of the community deserve to exist freely and see themselves represented in media.”
