On Wednesday, numerous survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking ring shared their harrowing stories of abuse at a news conference outside the U.S. Capitol. The women — some of whom were 14-year-old girls when Maxwell lured them into Epstein’s lair — pleaded with the Republican-controlled Congress to pass a resolution insisting that the Trump administration release all information related to the investigation into Epstein’s crimes.
Meanwhile, at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, President Donald Trump issued threats aimed at any Republican lawmaker who might dare to vote in favor of the resolution. And the president — notorious for his own abuse of women — continued to characterize the issue as a “Democrat hoax,” even though he made release of the Epstein files a key promise of his presidential campaign in 2024 when the “hoax” was a favorite right-wing cause. Trump’s reversal on the issue remains a mystery that has made even MAGA loyalists wonder what their leader is trying to hide.
Given how Trump has yet to pay a political price for his many serious breaches of law and the Constitution, it would be ironic, but fitting, if the lurid sexual perversions of his old buddy, Epstein, are what finally do him serious damage.
