Troops in U.S. cities: ‘We are not their enemy’

Re: “A call to my fellow veterans to stand up to Trump deployments” (Sept. 13, Opinion):

The U.S. military personnel being deployed against their fellow citizens face a very difficult and, for most of them, uncomfortable position.

Op-Ed author Edward Orton’s call for our veterans to join forces to peacefully resist President Donald Trump’s use of our military to institute a police state is well considered. The general citizenry is not equipped to effectively address such hegemony.

At the same time, we must maintain a mindset that the men and women who we may see deployed on our streets are mostly good citizens who have entered the services in order to protect our country, our people and our Constitution.

It is imperative that, if such deployments happen in our communities, we let them know that we are not their enemy, we appreciate their service and that we know that these deployments are not their personal choice.

    Michael Tanksley, Woodinville
