Re: “Why Democrats keep losing support even as Trump falters badly” (Jan. 11, Opinion):
Almost all political columns, letters and David Horsey cartoons in The Seattle Times revolve around slamming President Donald Trump. That’s why I found it refreshing to read columnist Lynn Schmidt’s column that was critical of Democrats too.
She does admit her piece is an educated guess, and I will excuse her for saying Trump is faltering badly. Trump’s job approval has risen slightly since late December while Democratic job approval is still near an all-time low.
Schmidt reminded us Democrats won special and off-year elections but she also states that Americans felt deceived about President Joe Biden’s health decline. (How many times did Republicans mention that?) She said Americans are angry because they had no choice except to accept Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president. The truth: Harris was unpopular and had literally no major accomplishments as vice president, and we now know her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, allegedly ignored massive corruption in Minnesota. They were a disaster.
The Democratic Party has lost its way and Schmidt wants accountability and apologies for poor choices before moving on. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin disagrees. I’ll take Schmidt’s word.
