Income tax: Keep state spending under control

Re: “Democrats’ income tax plan must include overhaul of entire code” (Feb. 8, Opinion):

The editorial is spot on and sobering. State spending has nearly doubled in 10 years despite the fact that the population of the state has only increased by about 1 million since 2016.

We do need a better way to fund the needs of Washington state rather than relying on the increasingly regressive tax system currently in place that impedes growth, innovation and job creation. Nonetheless, before any of this can take place, state spending needs to be brought under control.

The Democratic Party, which has had a longstanding stranglehold on state government, needs to take a long look in the mirror regarding these issues rather than trot out the usual villains when discussing affordability.

    Mario D. Forte, Tacoma
