    Iran war: History repeats itself

Re: “I left Iran years ago. I welcome U.S. intervention there” (March 7, Opinion):

I appreciated the My Take essay backing the invasion of Iran. My sympathies are with anyone harmed by the current regime there.

But how did we get here? In 1952 Iran had a democratically elected government, which decided to nationalize its petroleum industry. The U.K. and U.S. objected and helped to overthrow that legitimate government in favor of the Shah. The royal family became so corrupt that it brought about the Iranian revolution, and we all know how that worked out.

So now we are attempting to do the same thing we did back in 1953, a regime change, but somehow we are expecting different results.

It’s not a question of if Iran needed a regime change or not. The question is, given our track record, are we the ones most qualified to bring about that change, or are we simply repeating our mistakes of the past?

    Marshall Dunlap, Kent
