Wyndham Clark battled more than just a difficult golf course in the final round of the 2026 U.S. Open. Throughout his Sunday afternoon at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the maligned American went up against an unruly New York crowd actively rooting for him to fail.
Despite the unfair adversity Clark faced in the final round, he braved the elements to shoot a 3-over 73 and capture his second U.S. Open title. With the trophy in his hands and a medal around his neck, Clark won some fans over with a brilliant response to the malicious crowd.
“New York didn’t really like me, [but] I love you guys,” Clark told NBC’s Mike Tirico during his post-round interview. “I get it. Some of it is self-deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret.”
Clark caught some heat at the 2025 U.S. Open when he damaged a locker in a fit of rage after missing the cut at Oakmont Country Club. The 32-year-old had another outburst at the 2025 PGA Championship, flinging his driver into a sign after a poor shot and nearly striking a volunteer.
“I’ve been sorry multiple times, and I’m still sorry,” Clark said. “Hopefully I can win you guys over eventually.”
