I’ve worked with survivors of child abuse for over a decade. I can attest that confidentiality, privacy and having safe adults to turn to are crucial for abuse disclosures. For many children experiencing abuse or harm at home, a trusted adult at school may be the only person who recognizes that something is wrong and can help connect them with support. Initiative 001 (IL26-001), on your November ballot, would remove commonsense record protections for victims of child abuse. The changes it makes would allow abusers who have been accused of, or even charged with raping, beating or otherwise harming their…

Perhaps you enjoy a burger in a lettuce wrap once in a while—but what if greens were also crucial to the patty? That’s the ultimate promise of new research showing lettuce can be engineered to produce myoglobin, a protein found in meat.Myoglobin (and its better-known relative hemoglobin) contains the compound heme, the red pigment in blood. Adding heme can give plant-based meat alternatives a meaty flavor and the ability to “bleed.” For example, Impossible Foods uses a compound called leghemoglobin (a heme protein derived from soybeans) to flavor its meat alternatives. But using myoglobin, which is found in animal tissue,…
The Justice Department’s decision to investigate the five TV networks that make up the White House television pool for potentially violating antitrust laws has thrust the decades-old press pool system into the spotlight. The investigation comes after Trump last month barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds. The TV pool members responded by declining pool coverage for four days initially, and then on two subsequent occasions when CNN was blocked from performing its pool duties. That meant there was limited video coverage of Trump for six days, including his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and…

India’s refiners are reducing purchases of Russian crude for November delivery because its price advantage has largely disappeared. Chinese demand is pushing up Russian prices while recovering Middle Eastern supplies give Indian buyers alternatives. Russia’s share of India’s crude imports reportedly fell from as high as 56% in July to about 35% in September. Before anyone presents this as India suddenly embracing Washington’s foreign policy, look at the economics. The discount that attracted buyers is no longer doing the same job. India bought Russian oil because it made commercial sense. A refinery must consider crude costs, delivery costs, and what…
