On the day of Donald Trump’s second inauguration, an air raid was in effect in Odesa for much of the afternoon. People went about their business. Street vendors continued selling coffee. Trams kept running. At Pryvoz, the mammoth farmers’ (and everything else) market, electricity went out for a while, but that seemed to have no effect on the pace of commerce; if it was slow, that was because it was a Monday. In the two years and 11 months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Odesa has gone through stages: months of shock and fear, followed by something…

WASHINGTON — Senators received an affidavit Tuesday from the former sister-in-law of defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth in which she says his behavior caused his second wife to fear for her safety. The receipt of the affidavit comes after Senate Armed Services Committee staffers were in contact with Hegseth’s former sister-in-law for several days.  The former sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth, submitted the affidavit in response to a Jan. 18 letter from Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., seeking “a statement attesting to your personal knowledge about Mr. Hegseth’s fitness to occupy this important position.” Reed asked Danielle Hegseth to detail what she knew of “instances…

If President Trump has his way, the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles will soon slam into reverse. He will erase tax credits for electric vehicle purchases, federal grants for chargers, and subsidies and loans to help retool assembly lines and build battery factories.Executive orders issued by Mr. Trump on Inauguration Day amount to a sweeping repudiation of a centerpiece of former President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s multibillion dollar program to address climate change, which Republicans cast as a campaign to ban gasoline cars. The orders also present a challenge to automakers that have invested billions of dollars in electric vehicles,…

Germany’s failing auto sector may prove to be an integral power play for China, as Chinese OEMs are eyeing soon-to-be vacant Volkswagen (VW) factories. Volkswagen plans to close at least three factories by 2027 due to declining sales amid the country’s exigency to eliminate fossil fuels. Germany once looked to China to offload vehicles, but Chinese-made EVs are drastically more affordable than anything Germany could produce. China provides subsidies for their auto manufacturers, who are able to produce every part necessary for autos domestically. More importantly, Germany has abandoned economic objectives for climate change objectives and believes it must reduce…

HONG KONG: Hong Kong tried on Tuesday (Jan 21) to reset its relationship with new US President Donald Trump but sent mixed messages by also condemning “malicious” comments by his former deputy about jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai. Chief executive John Lee said he hoped for a “good starting point” for Hong Kong-US ties, which frayed during a US-China trade war that began in Trump’s first term. “There are a lot of commonalities and common interests between Hong Kong and the US, and with the new president in office, I hope to see that there will be good efforts to promote…
