49ers GM’s, HC’s comments hint at extension for Brock Purdy

An underwhelming year didn’t change how the San Francisco 49ers view quarterback Brock Purdy.

Next season, Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract ( a four-year, $3.7M deal). On Wednesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch signaled they plan to extend their franchise QB.

“Listen, I think what we know about Brock is he’s our guy,” Lynch told the media. “We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time.”

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested he would prefer to sign Purdy soon, which would solidify his future with the franchise.

“I plan on being here with Brock the whole time I’m here,” Shanahan said. “And we’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We almost just did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.”

In his second season, Purdy — the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft — led the Niners to Super Bowl LVIII, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22.

However, this past season, the 25-year-old failed to prove he could flourish without his weapons.

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed 13 games because of Achilles and knee issues. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending ACL/MCL tear in a Week 7 loss to the Chiefs.

In 15 starts, Purdy completed a career-low 65.9% of his passes for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also tossed a career-high 12 interceptions. San Francisco finished 6-11, failing to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

His dip wouldn’t be a problem if the 49ers could sign him to another team-friendly deal. But Spotrac estimates his market value is a four-year deal worth $59.7M annually.

Per The San Francisco Standard’s David Lombardi, Purdy said becoming the league’s highest-paid player isn’t his top priority, and he wants a new deal before starting the team’s offseason program.

The 49ers should consider letting Purdy play out the final year of his deal, but they clearly want to keep him. Anticipate the club giving him a new deal this offseason, even if it overpays for him.
