Child welfare: Invest in health care

Re: “Affordable child care needed, many agree” (July 10, Northwest):

The current administration, in its concern over the low birthrate, is considering a $1,000 investment for each child born. Yet the recently passed budget bill cuts funding for Planned Parenthood, hospitals and health care for millions. It totally overlooks the need for and cost of child care. And time will tell how schools are impacted by that bill.

Until needs of childbearing and child rearing are attended to, there are few incentives to increase a family. The $1,000 investment would be better spent investing in health care so women can carry and deliver a child safely.
