Re: “Woodland Park Zoo to hold its first adults-only play day” (July 22, Entertainment):
There’s nothing fun about this for the animals in Woodland Park Zoo. Every animal confined at the zoo, whether captured or bred, is wild. They retain all their wild instincts — all of which is denied to them. Depending on the species, they are denied courting, mating, migrating, hibernating, hunting, running, swimming, foraging, etc. And for what? A few minutes of our entertainment?
We can learn about animals and their conservation without causing suffering to the ones who fill zoo cages. It’s time our zoo leads the captivity industry into a compassionate future.
