Re: “Pike Place Market to remain car-free until next spring” (July 26, Local News):
Born and raised in Seattle, I have depended on our beloved Pike Place Market for my shopping needs throughout the past 50 years. The market has been a year-round destination where I could pop in and pick up flowers, dinner supplies, a birthday gift or simply enjoy a pastry.
While making the market car-free during tourist season was understandable, it has affected my ability to visit as frequently. With the recent extension of the car-free policy until spring, my disappointment has grown. The article focused on the residents living near the market, but for people like me — who live several miles away and must drive or take transit — the situation is much different. Unlike residents who are steps from a vendor’s stall, accessing the market now requires parking in expensive garages to pick up my pasta and flowers. Sadly, it no longer makes sense to go; it is such a feeling of loss.
Let’s not make the market a destination only for tourists and nearby residents. It is a Seattle treasure for all to enjoy.
