Should Alaskans feel a chill when Trump says ‘swap’?

President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Alaska is unlikely to produce a peace deal to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, no matter how much the president wishes he could come up with a bargain and boost his long-held desire to win a Nobel Peace Prize.

Neither Trump’s schmoozing nor his threats have budged Putin from his insistence that Russia must get a big chunk of Ukraine (if he cannot get it all) because Ukraine, for centuries, was part of the Russian Empire and, in the 20th century, an important region of the Soviet Union. Perhaps to mollify Putin, Trump has lately spun the idea of some kind of “land swap” to end the war (though a swap implies a trade of some kind, and no one is talking about giving the Ukrainians anything).

When Trump says swap, what does he mean? Just how desperate is he to win that Nobel? Should citizens of Alaska — which was once part of Russia — be nervous?
