    Democracy: ‘It depends on us’

As a Seattle resident, I support not only the pro-democracy protests happening across the country but also here in Washington. At a time when basic democratic principles like the right to vote and fair elections are being challenged, we must remain committed to defending them.

Washington continues to be a leader in voter access, with vote-by-mail and automatic registration. But threats to democracy elsewhere, including voter suppression and disinformation, impact us all. Democracy is only as strong as the people willing to stand up for it.

I applaud the work being done here in Washington to promote fair elections, accurate information and accountability. Let’s continue to demand that democratic institutions remain strong, inclusive and transparent.

Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It depends on us.

    Bert Greenwood, Seattle
