The 2025 NFL season began on Thursday night with an insane game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys that saw an hour weather delay, one of the league’s best players get ejected before the ball was even snapped due to a spit-off and a superstar wide receiver struggle to make clutch plays.
Here are some key takeaways from Thursday’s 24-20 Eagles victory.
Cowboys big-name wide receiver duo came up small in big moments
If you look at the final stat for Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb it would be easy to conclude that he had a pretty good game.
He finished with seven catches for 110 yards, averaged 15.7 yards per catch and had a big reception of 32 yards. Great stuff. The exact sort of stuff the Cowboys are paying him big money for.
Those numbers, however, do not tell the entire story of the game, because he very easily could have had more. A lot more. And it could have helped the Cowboys steal a Week 1 upset.
The problem for Lamb and the Cowboys is that he had an absolutely brutal second half that saw three catchable balls all go through his hands, including a fourth-down play that could have extended the Cowboys’ final drive. It would have required an above average play to haul it in, but that’s why the Cowboys are paying him big money to make those plays.
