Sharks GM takes shot at Maple Leafs over Mitch Marner

Everyone knows that standing out for a major Canadian NHL franchise comes with added weight and pressure.

Not every player can handle it, and that is exactly what San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier referred to in recent comments, taking a shot at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Grier compared what current Vegas Golden Knights star forward Mitch Marner experienced after being traded from Toronto to the Sin City franchise in July 2025.

Sharks GM uses Mitch Marner to take jab at Maple Leafs

The Sharks recently acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose’s general manager believes that, just as it did for Marner, the move could allow Nurse to play in a much less pressured environment, take a deep breath and perform at a higher level.

“You saw a little bit of that with Mitch Marner getting out of Toronto. Just to be able to breathe, play hockey, and not have — sometimes you kind of feel like the weight of the world’s on your shoulders to perform, and if you lose, it’s your fault; if you win, no one really says anything,” Grier said, via Sportskeeda.

“That’s just the life of a player in a big, big Canadian market, and if you’re a marquee player there, that always adds extra pressure to it. We think his coming here and getting out of that environment will only help his game.”

Marner was traded to Vegas in a deal that sent Nicolas Roy to the Maple Leafs on July 1, 2025.

Proof of Marner’s game-changing ability is that he helped lead the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes. Although Vegas ultimately lost the series, the Markham, Ontario, native left a lasting impression throughout the season.

In 81 appearances, he scored 24 goals and added 56 assists for a total of 80 points.

There is certainly some truth to Grier’s comments, but the other side of the argument is that some players thrive under that pressure and can lead their teams to glory.
