    Birthrate: What about overpopulation? | The Seattle Times

    Re: “Why dads, not ‘duds,’ matter for the baby bust” (Sept. 3, Opinion):

    For our country, along with many others, to be pushing for a higher birthrate seems to me shortsighted at best. It’s true that a lower birthrate will cause initial pain and need for adjustment, but what’s our alternative? To keep flooding the Earth with more and more humans until there is no room or resources left?

    It seems like a giant Ponzi scheme — to enlarge one generation to pay for the last generation and so on. When and where does it stop? I believe that now is the time we should be holding the line — not increasing our birthrate — and encouraging other nations to do the same.
