Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber extended his National League home run lead on Tuesday night by clubbing his 50th home run of the season against the New York Mets. It not only gave him the first 50HR season of his career, it also put him in some pretty exclusive company both with the Phillies and all of Major League Baseball.
Only the second Phillies player to hit 50 home runs
With his 50th home run, Schwarber became just the second player in the history of the Phillies franchise to reach that milestone in a single season.
He joins former first baseman Ryan Howard who is still the franchise’s single-season record-holder with 58 home runs during the 2006 season. It would take quite a hot streak for Schwarber to catch Howard’s record over the next few weeks, but he is perfectly capable of going on a run that could help him challenge it.
