On deck: Yankees-Red Sox, Sanchez scoreless streak, Misiorowski dominance, streaking Mariners, Bibee’s bad start

It’s the first day of June, and that means summer is at least unofficially here. Let’s look at the top MLB storylines heading into the season’s third full month.

    Unique broadcast for Red Sox-Yankees

Some call it the best rivalry in sports. Others call it the most overhyped rivalry in baseball.

The New York Yankees host the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series beginning Friday night at Yankee Stadium. It would seem like a mismatch as the Yankees have a 36-23 record and the Red Sox are 25-33.

Regardless, the television networks can never get enough of this rivalry. Fox will broadcast Saturday night’s game, with the twist being that former Yankees greats Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, and Red Sox great David Ortiz, will be in the broadcast booth with Kevin Burkhardt. It seems likely there will be more reminiscing than play-by-play.

Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez and Connelly Early will likely pitch for the Red Sox against Ryan Weathers, Will Warren and Cam Schlittler. The Yankees swept a three-game series from the Red Sox in April in the teams’ only meeting this season.

The Yankees have won six of their last games against the Red Sox after Boston had won eight in a row.

    Cristopher Sanchez’s scoreless streak

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez is on a franchise-record 44 2/3-scoreless innings streak. He will attempt to keep it going on Wednesday night when the Phillies host the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park.

Sanchez last allowed a run on April 30 to the San Francisco Giants. He pitched 39 scoreless innings in May, going 4-0 in five starts while giving up 25 hits, striking out 45 and walking three.

Sanchez is also getting within range of the Major League Baseball record of 58 consecutive innings by Orel Hershiser in 1988 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

    Nobody beats The Wiz

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Jacob Misiorowski also had a very merry month of May, allowing one run in 38 2/3 innings for a 0.23 ERA.

Opponents had just 14 hits off Misiorowski, who had 57 strikeouts and six walks. He starts on Friday night against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, where Misiorowski doesn’t have to worry about the thin air of Denver because hardly anybody makes contact against him.

    Here come the Mariners

After nearly winning the American League pennant last season, the Seattle Mariners were one of baseball’s biggest disappointments in 2026. Until last week.

The Mariners swept a three-game series from the Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks to move into first place in the AL West, albeit with a 31-29 record.

The Mariners will try to keep the momentum going this week when they host the New York Mets for three games at T-Mobile Park, then play a three-game road series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

    Unlucky 13 for Tanner Bibee

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee looks for a change of luck on Saturday night when he starts against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Bibee is 0-7 in 13 starts this season. He is one of just four MLB pitchers since 1976 to start on opening day and go at least 12 starts into a season without a win, joining the Atlanta Braves’ Carl Morton (1976), Miami Marlins’ Jose Urena (2018) and Rockies’ Kyle Freeland (2025)
