Injuries mounting for 49ers before pivotal ‘TNF’ matchup vs. Rams

The San Francisco 49ers would have one of the more explosive offenses in the NFL if they could stay healthy.

On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with the media after Sunday’s 26-21 home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He provided many key injury updates that don’t bode well for San Francisco.

Several San Francisco 49ers players are battling injuries ahead of ‘TNF’ matchup vs. Los Angeles Rams

San Francisco wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ribs) both exited against Jacksonville. The status of both pass-catchers is up in the air before Thursday’s road game against the Los Angeles Rams (3-1).

Pearsall — who is fourth in the NFL in receiving yards (327) through four games — is believed to have suffered a “minor PCL injury,” but it’s not season-ending. Still, the WR and others are facing a short turnaround.

“Hopefully, we’ll find out more later today,” Shanahan said, via David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. “But anytime guys are sore and hurting on Monday, you usually don’t stress too much about it. But anytime you have a Thursday game, it’s a totally different element. So, I’m concerned with anybody who’s not totally healthy at this moment, but we’ll have to get more information on that later today to really have a clue what to speculate.”

To make matters worse for the Niners, quarterback Brock Purdy may not be 100% against the Rams. He told Shanahan his right toe is sore again. The injury forced him to miss Weeks 2 and 3.

“[Purdy] didn’t indicate it to me at all during the game,” the coach said. “I talked to him on the phone last night, and he said it was starting to bother him a little last night. But nothing during the game at all.”

How does this impact 49ers’ plans vs. Rams?

The 49ers better hope their defense can stop Rams QB Matthew Stafford, who’s second in the league in passing yards (1,114) through four games. San Francisco (3-1) is sixth in the league in passing yards allowed (165 YPG).

The 49ers’ 22nd-ranked scoring offense (20 PPG) was already sputtering. The injuries worsen the unit’s problems.
