The Kansas City Chiefs just got their star wide receiver back, sort of speaking.
Rashee Rice is a free man again, and while he still has to heal from his knee surgery, he’s expected to be back to full strength for training camp.
Nevertheless, the Chiefs still don’t have enough reliable weapons around Patrick Mahomes.
That’s why Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes they might be interested in making a run at Stefon Diggs, the biggest fish still available in free agency.
The Chiefs might make a run at Stefon Diggs
“Rashee Rice was released from jail Tuesday, and the Chiefs have an interesting summer ahead at his position,” Breer wrote. “They were counting on him to be their top wide receiver, with Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton the other guys figuring to play big roles. Given the reliability question there with Rice, the idea of kicking the tires on someone like Stefon Diggs sure would make some sense.”
The Chiefs are more than familiar with Diggs. He’s been on the losing end of countless playoff battles with the Chiefs, so he’d probably love the opportunity to team up with them for a change.
Diggs is coming off a modest season with the New England Patriots, but he still eclipsed 1,000 yards and proved that he could be trusted in high-stakes situations.
The Chiefs still don’t know how Rice will recover from that knee procedure, especially after spending the most crucial stretch of his rehab in jail.
Even if he’s healthy, he hasn’t been able to stay out of trouble since he entered the league, so there are no guarantees about his availability going forward.
Worthy should take a step forward after a disappointing sophomore season, but that’s not a guarantee.
Diggs might no longer be in his prime, but he’d still give a team a reliable pair of hands and another experienced playmaker. Perhaps he could help the Chiefs’ Hall of Fame quarterback lead the team back to the playoffs after a disappointing 2025.
