Adam Driver Fans Puzzle Over ‘Heat 2’ Role Amid Months Of Speculation

Adam Driver fans are, understandably, frustrated by the lack of clarity about whether the “Star Wars” alum will actually appear in the long-awaited sequel to “Heat.” The original film was released in 1995 and directed by Michael Mann, who worked with Driver on the 2023 biographical sports drama “Ferrari.” The first film starred Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and the late Val Kilmer. Mann and Meg Gardiner published “Heat 2” in 1995, which covers the main characters’ formative years, and they are currently casting the movie adaptation.

The long-awaited sequel to 1995’s “Heat” is finally in the works, with Michael Mann returning to direct. The sequel will be adapted from Mann and Meg Gardiner’s book of the same name. Although it’s being called a sequel, it’s actually more of a prequel, as it covers the characters’ lives before the events of the first movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio will reportedly take over for the late Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, while Christian Bale has been cast as Lt. Vincent Hanna and Stephen Graham as Neil McCauley, according to a report by Entertainment Weekly published on October 26.

Speculation has suggested that “The Bear” star Ebon Moss-Bachrach will play Kelso, who was played in the original film by Tom Noonan. Adam Driver is reportedly playing the villain, Otis Wardell. However, the film’s IMDb page lists both roles as “rumored,” not confirmed.

Fans have speculated that the film’s constantly shifting filming schedule might be why their parts haven’t been confirmed, as Driver is also preparing for his role as Mister Sinister in the new “X-Men” reboot, scheduled for a May 2028 theatrical release.

Stephen Graham Seemingly Confirms Adam Driver’s Involvement In ‘Heat 2’

Back in September, Stephen Graham talked about shooting “Heat 2” during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show. He revealed that he had to “leave in a couple of hours” for the project.

“It’s Heat 2, and I’m gonna be working with Leo, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Adam Driver, and Michael Mann’s directing,” he said, seemingly confirming Driver’s involvement.

However, in a follow-up interview, Graham didn’t mention Driver by name when asked about the movie.

In an October 2026 TODAY interview, Graham didn’t mention Driver’s name. While it could have been an accidental omission, it could also confirm that the actor backed out of the project because of other filming commitments.

“I can’t quite believe it, to be honest with you,” Graham said. “I feel very blessed for the opportunities that I get… To be able to work with Leonardo DiCaprio again and Christian Bale, you know, and to work with Michael Mann again, it’s an absolute honor.”

The “Adolescence” star previously worked with DiCaprio in “Gangs of New York.” He also previously worked with Mann in the 2009 film “Public Enemies,” which starred Bale. He has not yet worked with Driver.

There have been rumors that Inde Navarrette, the breakout star of the 2026 horror movie “Obsession,” had turned down a role in the film. However, she recently revealed that she had never actually been offered a part.

During an appearance on The Kyle Buchanan Show podcast, the host asked if she was offered a role in “Heat 2,” to which she replied, “No.”

“I’m glad that you brought it up because I can say it. No, I was not offered Heat 2,” the actress said, as per The Hollywood Reporter. “I auditioned, I want to say, for two months from April all the way up until — I don’t know if it had gotten cast, but it was just kind of no longer a conversation.”

“I remember I sent in multiple self-tapes, different self-tapes. I was like, ‘What do you like? What do you not like?’ I mean, it’s with an insane cast and even if it was as small of a character. I just wanted to learn. Definitely didn’t say no,” she added. “That’s one of those opportunities where no matter how big you get, you’re still gonna get told no.”

Inde Navarette Will Appear Opposite Adam Driver In ‘X-Men’

Before the interview, there was speculation that the actress passed on “Heat 2” to accept a role in “X-Men,” where she has officially been cast as Rogue. If the filming schedules did overlap, it could hint at Driver’s potential involvement, since both Driver and Naverrette have been confirmed to appear in the upcoming “X-Men” reboot.

The cast also includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm.

Jake Schreier directs the film, which is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028.
