Adam Thielen doesn’t move the needle in Steelers’ playoff push

If Adam Thielen wanted to make the playoffs in his final season, he probably should have chosen a different team to play for.

On Tuesday, one day after requesting his release from the Minnesota Vikings (4-8) to pursue an opportunity with a playoff contender, the 12-year veteran wideout, 35, agreed to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-6).

Signing Adam Thielen may not have intended effect Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping

While the Steelers are certainly better than the Vikings, they are slipping in the AFC playoff race. Thielen probably won’t make a big difference.

According to NFL Pro data, Thielen’s catch rate is 20.4 percentage points lower than expected this season, and he has contributed just 0.6 expected points added per reception, both career lows. In 11 games, including four starts, the two-time Pro Bowl selection has eight receptions on 18 targets for 69 yards.

The Vikings may have the NFL’s worst quarterback situation, and while playing alongside Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers might give Thielen a better chance to contribute, he’s unlikely to be the game-changer Pittsburgh needs to win the AFC North. NFL Pro insights notes that Rodgers’ 196.9 passing yards per game are his fewest as a starter. The Steelers rank last in the league in intended air yards, and Thielen isn’t particularly dynamic with the ball in his hands. In each of the past four seasons, he’s gained fewer yards after the catch than expected, including just 14 yards after the catch this season. (h/t NFL Pro)

Pittsburgh faces the Baltimore Ravens (6-6) in Week 14, with first place in the division at stake. Its lack of playmakers could make it difficult to come away with a win in the AFC North showdown, and Thielen’s addition doesn’t do much to change that.
