Alex Palou can now officially be defined as one of the greatest drivers in IndyCar history.

The three-time IndyCar champion came into the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 with wins in four of the five races of the 2025 season and a commanding points lead. Despite his dominance, he had yet to win a race on an oval.

That changed on Sunday, when Palou passed Marcus Ericsson with 14 laps to go in the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 and held off the pack to win the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’.

Palou is the first Spaniard to ever win the Indy 500. The win is his fifth in six races this season and the 16th of his IndyCar career. Palou is the first driver since A.J. Foyt in 1979 to win five of the first six races of an IndyCar season.

“I cannot believe it, what an amazing day,” Palou told Fox Sports. “What an amazing race. At the end, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to pass Marcus or not, but (I) made it happen. First oval win, what a place.”

Ericsson finished runner-up, with David Malukas, Pato O’ Ward and Felix Rosenqvist rounding out the top five. Kyle Kirkwood, Santino Ferrucci, Christian Rasmussen, Christian Lundgaard and Conor Daly completed the top 10.

Other notable finishers include two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato in 11th, four-time winner Helio Castroneves in 13th, 2018 Indy 500 winner Will Power in 19th, 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon in 23rd and two-time winner Josef Newgarden in 25th.

Kyle Larson finished 28th after a crash, while a crash before the green flag took Scott McLaughlin out of the race, relegating him to a last-place (33rd) finish.

The seventh race of the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series season will take place in Detroit. The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix will take place at 12:30 p.m. ET on June 1. Fox will provide coverage.
