Cameras captured a series of candid reactions from the actress during the 2026 ceremony, moments that quickly spread online and divided viewers.

While some questioned her composure after losing in two major categories, others praised her honesty in an industry often criticized for performative reactions.

By the end of the night, Seyfried’s loss had transformed into one of the most talked-about moments of the show.

Amanda Seyfried raised eyebrows when she lost the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture to Rose Byrne.

In a viral clip, the 40-year-old briefly grimaced before forcing a smile, standing, clapping, and applauding the winner.

The actress had been nominated for “The Testament of Ann Lee,” while Byrne’s performance in “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” had already gained significant momentum following its Sundance premiere.

Byrne previously won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlin Film Festival and earned a Critics Choice Award nomination, making her a strong contender going into the night.

The intensity surrounding Amanda Seyfried’s reaction was heightened by her awards history. Of the six nominees in her category, three had previously won Golden Globes.

Emma Stone took home trophies for “La La Land” in 2017 and “Poor Things” in 2024. Kate Hudson won Supporting Actress for “Almost Famous” back in 2001.

Seyfried herself won Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Film in 2023 for “The Dropout.”

That background made the loss feel heavier for some viewers, especially given Seyfried’s past success with the organization.

Later in the evening, she faced another disappointment when she lost again, having also been nominated for “Long Bright River.”

The double loss fueled online sympathy and criticism alike, as fans debated whether expectations and pressure played a role in her visible reactions.

Amanda Seyfried’s Body Language Analyzed By An Awards Expert

As reactions poured in, body language expert Judi James offered a more nuanced explanation of Seyfried’s behavior to the Daily Mail.

According to James, awards-season etiquette has shifted over time.

“There are two contrasting ways to react to losing out on an award when you know you’re on split-screen,” the expert explained.

She described the traditional approach as exaggerated joy, noting that some nominees appear “as though they’ve just won, with screams and open mouthed grins of fake delight.”

James added that modern celebrities increasingly opt for honesty or humor instead of forced enthusiasm.

“Recently there has been a growing tendency to reveal or act out the more honest emotions of losing as a kind of a joke though,” she said. “Celebs will often now show signs of comedy annoyance or anger at losing rather than pretend to be delighted.”

According to James, Seyfried’s expression fit squarely within that newer trend.

James emphasized that Amanda Seyfried’s now-viral grimace appeared intentional rather than resentful.

“Amanda’s facial expression here suggests she was joking with the comedy grimace,” she said.

James pointed out that the “Mean Girls” star didn’t prepare a rehearsed “losers” smile, instead looking down before the winner was announced, suggesting she had no intention of performing fake bravado.

Still, James acknowledged that the moment mattered deeply to the actress. “She does look tense here, showing how important a moment it was for her,” she continued.

The expert identified a subtle physical cue that revealed Seyfried’s disappointment, explaining that “the only real ‘tell’ of having found losing hard comes from a hard blink that she does as the winner’s name is called and she starts to clap.”

Despite that, Seyfried quickly recovered, smiling and chatting as part of what James described as her version of “good losers” face.

Amanda Seyfried’s Viral Night Continued As Social Media Weighed In

Seyfried’s candid moments resurfaced later when another award was announced.

Cameras appeared to catch her clapping before the winner was revealed and mouthing what some viewers interpreted as “she’s not even here” when Michelle Williams was announced as the winner.

Williams took home Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for “Dying for Sex.”

Social media reaction was swift and divided.

One viewer wrote, “Amanda Seyfried not paying attention and preemptively clapping because she probably didn’t think she’d win is the best thing I’ve seen all night. I love her.”

Others were harsher, posting comments ranging from “Amanda Seyfried has been robbed again” to “my favorite 2x loser Amanda Seyfried.”
