New York state has enacted a bill to extort fossil fuel companies in the name of climate change. Governor Kathy Hochul believes the bill will generate $75 billion in funds for the state over the next 25 years, which she claims will be used to fight climate change. Why would any energy company want to operate out of New York? The fines for merely existing are unclear, but the New York Department of Environmental Conservation will begin determining the extent of each company’s greenhouse gas emissions. Worse, they will begin fining companies for the amount they began releasing 24 years…

Trump has picked conservative lawyer Harmeet Dhillon to head up the civil rights division at the Department of Justice and this choice was not a coincidence. Silicon Valley investor Marc Andreesen, who became a Trump supporter during this election cycle, recently described how Dhillon will aggressively go after woke DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) policies in the corporate world and academia. Andreesen even suggests that the writing is on the wall and that some corporations are already making big changes in anticipation of Dhillon’s arrival in Washington. Pope Francis is a paradoxical figure. Despite leading a church with a long, egregious history of being synonymous with strife, injustice and abuse, the old, ailing Argentinian Jesuit strikes me, at his core, as a modest clergyman who abhors human suffering and misery. Like you and me, the pope can see what Israel has done with such ruthless ferocity to besieged Palestinians for more than a year in the barren, dystopian remnants of Gaza and the occupied West Bank. I believe that Francis understands that bearing witness to human suffering and misery on an almost incomprehensible scale requires a response,…

The skin is by far the body’s biggest organ. Depending on your height and body mass, it covers an area of around 1.5 to 2 square metres and weighs between 3.5 and 10 kilograms – around 15 per cent of your total body mass. Think of it as a kind of intelligent armour. It helps you sense the world around you, protects your internal organs and defends you from pathogens. This would be reason enough to take good care of it, especially because premature ageing of skin can degrade its ability to fulfil all these functions, leaving you at higher…

After a half-century hiatus, thorium has returned to the front lines of nuclear power research as a source of fuel. In 2025, China plans to start building a demonstration thorium-based molten-salt reactor in the Gobi Desert. The 10-megawatt reactor project, managed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP), is scheduled to be operational by 2030, according to an environmental-impact report released by the Academy in October. The project follows a 2-MW experimental version completed in 2021 and operated since then. China’s efforts put it at the forefront of both thorium-based fuel breeding and molten-salt reactors.…
