BEIRUT: Lebanese armed group Hezbollah named Naim Qassem as its new leader on Tuesday (Oct 29) but Israel said his tenure would be “temporary”, an apparent threat after it killed his predecessor Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut over a month ago. “Temporary appointment. Not for long,” Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant posted on X with a photo of Qassem. Earlier, Iran-backed Hezbollah said in a written statement that its Shura Council had elected Qassem, 71, in accordance with its established mechanism for choosing a secretary general. Qassem was appointed as Hezbollah’s deputy chief in 1991 by the armed group’s then secretary general Abbas al-Musawi, who was killed by an Israeli helicopter attack the following year.…

Plans to pave the Trans-Amazonian highway in Brazil could accelerate deforestationPhoto by DeAgostini/Getty Images Deforestation has pushed the Amazon to the very edge of a tipping point that would see it become a net source of CO2 and accelerate climate change, according to research using new technologies to map carbon emissions in the rainforest from 2013 to 2022. Although it is historically a carbon sink, the Amazon biome released more carbon than it absorbed during 2015-16 and 2017-18, the report by Planet Labs, a company that provides satellite imaging, and the non-profit organisation Amazon Conservation found. There’s no cut-and-dry definition of a small business: The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) mainly evaluates them based on monetary figures, like total sales and revenue, and size, meaning how many employees work for the company. But exact criteria vary by industry, so identifying a small business is a “you know it when you see it” situation. And during the holidays, supporting them is crucial — the majority of small businesses rely on holiday shopping for at least one quarter of their annual revenue, according to the SBA.I’ve reported about small businesses for years, both at NBC Select and local…

The digital implementation makes it possible to embed multiple PID controllers on the same instrument, whose inputs and outputs can be either cascaded in a sequential fashion or used in a parallel configuration, that is, independently of one another. Thanks to the type of architecture depicted in Figure 6, the PID option embedded in lock-in amplifiers enhances the versatility of the instruments, making them benefit a large variety of applications – even though the specific application needs might significantly differ from one another. As previously mentioned, determining appropriate starting conditions for a PID controller and its optimization can be a…
