It hasn’t been a good year for people who care about climate change. A hoped-for peak in carbon emissions has failed to emerge, meaning we continue to warm the planet at an accelerating rate (see “Humanity has warmed the planet by 1.5°C since 1700”). Meanwhile, the election of Donald Trump for a second term as US president is likely to see the country retreat on climate action, with his pledge to “drill, baby, drill” for new oil and gas supplies. Similar sentiments towards fossil fuels come from Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, who has called the natural resources of…

Russia has begun mass production of mobile nuclear bunkers. This is in response to Ukraine’s use of Western US and British missiles to attack deep inside Russia to destroy its conventional capability so NATO can launch an invasion by March/April 2025. This has coincided with Mr Putin’s change of Russia’s doctrine to lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons to include the use of conventional weapons by Ukraine. Russia’s defense ministry said Ukraine attacked an ammunition stockpile in the Bryansk region using missiles supplied by the US military’s MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). Russia has also ordered the production of its…

Credit: Screenshot via The Late Show with Stephen Colbert President Bill Clinton recently raised some eyebrows by suggesting what criteria would be involved in electing America’s first female President. He thinks it’s less likely that his own party—the Democrats—will produce the first woman Commander-in-Chief, despite several attempts so far. In a recent interview with CBS’ Tracy Smith, Clinton was asked if he thought America wasn’t ready for a female President. Because, ya know, the spectacularly unqualified Kamala Harris’s loss can only be explained by sexism. Or something. “Maybe,” the former President replied. Things grew a little more interesting when Clinton…

“CLOSER TO A DIRECT CONFLICT” Maxim Starchak, a specialist on Russian nuclear policy at Queen’s University in Canada, said that the Kremlin’s doctrine “lowers the threshold” for nuclear weapons use. But it also “introduces ambiguity”, he said. “On the one hand, Russia speaks about the possibility of using nuclear weapons in case of a territorial threat, but on the other hand, the scale of such a threat is not clear.” Setting aside the nuclear question, Starchak said, the recent arrival of North Korean troops on the Russian side, and the US-supplied missile launches on the Ukrainian side “are certainly an…

The sight of the Sydney newspaper’s front page was enough to make one gasp aloud. Virat Kohli’s face, above folded arms, gazed back from The Daily Telegraph, the photograph taking up the entire top half of the page. A small image of Pat Cummins sat in the bottom left corner. The most arresting feature, however, was the gold headline in Hindi with an English translation underneath: Fight for the ages. The rest of the page was split evenly between the two languages with a message from Australia’s Test captain while on the back page was an article on India’s opening…
