Ayla Bell has found a pretty effective way to swerve one of adulthood’s most unavoidable small-talk questions.
The Houston-based social media star, who has built a following of millions with her dance, lifestyle, and fitness content, recently poked fun at the question of what she does for a living.
Now, Bell is explaining why the seemingly innocent question is not always so easy to answer and why she sometimes prefers to keep people guessing.
Bell walked into frame on August 10, placed a finger to her lips and swayed from side to side as Saucy Santana played in the background.
“How I be dodging them ‘what do you do for a living’ questions,” she wrote over the clip.
Followers seemed more than happy to let Bell keep her secrets. The comments quickly filled with heart-eye and fire emojis, cheeky requests for her to “bounce right over here” and fans calling her “gorgeous,” a “goddess” and their “queen.”
At least one person, however, walked straight into the joke. “What do you do!?” they asked.

Speaking exclusively with The Blast, Bell admitted that the question tends to make her laugh because explaining her career is not quite as simple as giving someone a conventional job title.
“I always laugh when people ask me what I do for a living because it’s one of those questions I never know how to answer without turning it into a whole conversation,” Bell tells The Blast.
“Social media is such a big part of my life, but there are so many different sides to what I do, so sometimes I’d rather just dodge the question completely,” she continued.
Bell Says The Viral ‘Quiet On The Creek’ Trend Was Perfect For Her
Rather than attempting to squeeze her career into a brief explanation, Ayla Bell found a much funnier way to address the question online.
“That’s why the ‘Quiet on the Creek’ trend was perfect for me — it was funny, it fit the moment, and honestly, sometimes it’s better to just keep people guessing,” she tells The Blast.
The sound also happens to fit Bell’s joke almost perfectly.
“Quiet on the Creek” began as an offhand remark from Saucy Santana, who recalled during a TikTok Live that people had to remain quiet while fishing to avoid scaring away the fish.
The phrase eventually took on a life of its own online, becoming a playful way of telling people to keep something private, mind their business or simply move in silence.
Santana ultimately turned the viral moment into a song, while stars including Lizzo, Monica and Damon Wayans have also put their own spins on the trend.
Bell’s version, however, turned the phrase into an answer for anyone curious about how she describes her increasingly unconventional career.
