    Baby boomers: ‘Dismayed and saddened’

Re: “One more reason to be mad at boomers: They have more money than everyone else” (Sept. 2, Opinion):

I was dismayed to read in Allison Schrager’s column that because there is “a large and growing gap in net worth between Americans over age 75 and those under 35” it’s “no wonder everyone hates the boomers.”

It’s one thing to be mad, it’s another to hate. Much of the column goes into detail about the reasons for the wealth disparity that has occurred between generations, but most of it is not really boomers’ fault, as she herself enumerates. And many of us boomers are doing significant things to alleviate some of the results of this accumulated but accidental outcome of disparity.

We already feel marginalized enough, as seniors, by a youth and consumer-oriented culture that scorns the very gifts that we can bring to the table, moving us into assisted-living facilities, and out of sight, discarded. To be hated as well just further adds to the poverty of connection and meaningful relationships that we can have as humans across the generations.

Dismayed and saddened. There’s enough hate going on already to sink the ship.

    Elizabeth Davidson, Bainbridge Island
