Carlos Alcaraz could be in GOAT conversation at the Aussie Open

The 2026 Australian Open main draw begins on Saturday, January 17, and there are plenty of eye-opening storylines around the tennis season’s first Grand Slam.

One of the more widely-discussed topics involves world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who will play in his first major since parting ways with decorated head coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

The expectations, however, do not change for the Spanish superstar, especially as he chases a feat at Melbourne that would firmly cement him among the greatest players of all time.

The Villena, Spain, native has already put together a legendary resume over the past five years. After jumping onto the global stage with his surprising quarterfinal run at the 2021 US Open, Alcaraz became the face of a new tennis generation the following year at Flushing Meadows.

Carlos Alcaraz has a chance to make history at the Australian Open

Carlos won the US Open in 2022, becoming the youngest man and the first male teenager in the Open Era to reach world No. 1. Thriving with his dynamic all-court game, the teenage sensation has fully lived up to the hype since, entering 2026 with six Grand Slams under his belt.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz now has a chance to achieve a feat that would once again separate him from the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

He can become the youngest player ever to win the career Grand Slam in Melbourne. The Australian Open is the only major Alcaraz has yet to conquer, with his deepest runs being two quarterfinal appearances.

Despite his past struggles down under, Alcaraz remains one of the favorites and has a very reasonable draw on paper. The road to the final includes a potential matchup against world No. 6 Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals and world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

Carlos will certainly like that path, considering he does not have to face either Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic before the final. Overall, it’s a long road to that stage of the tournament, but Alcaraz has embraced these kinds of historic opportunities before.
