The combination of a disappointing season (3-7) and some health issues for Deion Sanders has prompted some questions regarding his long-term fit as the head coach at the University of Colorado. But Sanders said on Tuesday that despite that on-field struggles and the health issues he is still the right man for the job. You just have to give him the chance to prove it.
Deion Sanders is not ready to give up on Colorado
During his news conference on Tuesday, Sanders acknowledged the coaching staff made some mistakes this season with the roster that he would like to do differently, and he wants the chance to prove it.
“You’ve got the right man,” Sanders told reporters. “I promise you, you do. And I’m going to prove that to you. Just give me an opportunity and a little more time, and I’m going to prove that to you.”
The 2025 season has been a trying one for Colorado on the field as the Buffaloes have stumbled to a 3-7 record and only 1-6 in conference play. It represents a major step backward for the program following last year’s nine-win campaign that saw them climb as high as No. 16 in the rankings.
But the departure of standouts Shedeur Sanders (quarterback) and Travis Hunter (wide receiver and cornerback) to the NFL have left massive holes in the roster that Colorado has not been able to fill.
In his first three years at Colorado, Sanders will have now finished with two losing seasons and currently owns a 16-19 overall record, and only 9-16 in Big 12 conference play.
Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension with the university before this season, tying him to the program through the 2029 season. That commitment and the buyout that would come with it would make it a costly move to replace him, but given the way prominent head coaches have been fired this season, programs seem to have little time for patience for losing games.
