In the mid-20th century, it was common for a household to be supported by a man’s salary from work outside the house. By the ’80s, women like me were entering the workforce and the additional revenue from our salaries was absorbed into the rising cost of housing and child care, quickly making the additional income a necessity, not a luxury.
It comes as no surprise to me to discover that a single person now might need two full-time jobs to cover expenses, and especially in a home with children, a couple might need three. Today, a married couple might each have their own job, plus one to share, polyemployment edging out polyamory as a trending lifestyle “choice.”
