Energy independence: Support collaborative approach statewide

Re: “This Seattle Democrat doesn’t know all that’s best for Eastern WA” (May 20, Opinion):

As a Seattle resident, I found the Tri-City Herald’s editorial compelling. I share the heightened concern over Washington Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen’s decision to block House Bill 1210, which unfortunately impacts not just the Tri-Cities but all of Washington.

While Sen. Pedersen represents a Seattle district, actions that stifle significant economic development, over 1,000 jobs and billions in investment in the Tri-Cities (especially in the promising clean nuclear energy sector) are shortsighted for our entire state. The prosperity and support of one region bolsters us all. HB 1210, which responsibly addressed regulatory timelines for vital nuclear projects with local fiscal accountability, deserved a debate for its potential to strengthen Washington’s energy independence and economy.

I urge Sen. Pedersen to reconsider his stance, recognize the Tri-Cities’ unique expertise, and support a more collaborative approach to statewide economic and energy opportunities. Such cooperation benefits every Washingtonian.

    Wyatt Rieden, Seattle
