Re: “Federal education cuts hit WA schools hard” (July 3, Education Lab):
Thank you for addressing the harmful impacts withholding state education funding will have on schools. However, you missed acknowledging the devastating impact this will have for young people’s access to after-school and summer programming across Washington.
With the loss of $20.8 million in 21st Century Community Learning Center funding, thousands of young people are in danger of losing access to critical programming that keeps them safe and supported. This will be particularly devastating in rural and underresourced parts of our state.
Kids will be put at risk — and will lose ground. These enriching programs keep kids safe, increase school and social engagement, and help young people thrive. Research shows that youth in programs do better in school, are more likely to graduate and are better prepared for the workforce.
At School’s Out Washington, we remain committed to advocating for an equitable ecosystem of expanded learning programs. Young people deserve the opportunity to thrive and realize their full potential.
We will stand with Washington’s youth and families and mobilize our communities to demand the release of the Fiscal Year 2025 funds. The stakes are too high to remain silent.
