Re: “Gluesenkamp Perez won a Trump WA district. Now she faces leftist heat” (May 17, Local News):
I applaud Washington U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez for her commitment to fight as a moderate Democrat for the people in her district and our country. I used to lament when tea party Republicans made it a badge of honor to not compromise in Congress; and now Democrats have followed suit, destroying the art of working together to “get things done.”
While the Democratic Party used to be the party of blue collar workers and small business owners rising to build a strong middle class, it has striven to broaden its scope in support of groups that have been overlooked and discriminated against. This is a good thing. However, the party now focuses so intently on a small sector that the larger base feels abandoned as the middle class shrinks.
Instead of castigating those who are disillusioned with Democrats, we need to do some soul searching and paradigm shifting, supporting Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez and encouraging more people like her to step up and represent us in Congress.
