79-year-old actress Goldie Hawn left the audience at the 2025 Academy Awards stunned when she candidly revealed her struggles with vision loss while presenting on stage.

Goldie Hawn, alongside Andrew Garfield, paused mid-speech after struggling to read the teleprompter, leading to a raw and unexpected moment.

“I was so lucky [to] make movies and making people laugh. And maybe some didn’t, but that’s OK,” Hawn began, before suddenly turning to Garfield.

“OK. Sweetheart, can you read that? I can’t read that,” she admitted. “I’m completely blind. I mean, I am! Cataracts.”

Garfield maintained his composure, responding calmly, “OK, I’ve got you,” before stepping in to help with the presentation.

Despite the lighthearted tone, sources close to Hawn later revealed to Daily Mail that the actress felt embarrassed by the attention her comment received.

“Goldie is embarrassed that the focus of her Oscar night was her vision issues,” an insider shared. “It is not something she wanted everyone talking about. She was just trying to be funny.”

Cataracts develop when the usually clear lens of the eye begins to develop a cloudy texture, which can make it feel as if one is viewing things through a fog.

The condition can impact any activity requiring sight, but it can make things like reading or driving, particularly at night, difficult. Cataracts often aren’t noticed for some time, as the condition tends to develop slowly.

However, the good news for affected individuals is that surgery to remove cataracts is usually safe and effective, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Before Goldie’s admission, Andrew was responsible for one of the most touching moments of the night.

The two-time Oscar nominee was joined by Goldie as they presented the award for Best Animated Feature Film. But Andrew took her by surprise when he brought her to tears as he revealed her surprise impact on his late mother.

“There’s a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort, and tonight, I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart,” Garfield shared, holding Hawn’s hand as she became visibly emotional. “You’ve given us movies full of joy. “I know for a fact that this is a short life, and the things that mattered before don’t matter anymore. And I think when I say things taste differently, I think things can taste much more sweet now because of the sorrow that I’ve felt, and they can taste much more bitter.”
