As recently as March 26, it was suggested that the New York Giants could trade up from the No. 3 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft to select either Miami’s Cam Ward, the consensus top signal-caller in this year’s class, or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
The Giants already added veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to their roster this month.
For an update offered on Friday, ESPN’s Matt Miller revealed that, per a scout, “New York loving Shedeur is the worst-kept secret in the league right now.” However, it sounds like the Giants won’t stop the Cleveland Browns from making Sanders the draft’s second pick assuming the Tennessee Titans grab Ward at No. 1.
“Should Ward and Sanders both be off the board,” Miller continued, “the Giants will be a premier destination for Colorado’s Travis Hunter, given the team’s needs at wide receiver and cornerback.”
The Giants are coming off a 3-14 season and could use a day-one starter such as Hunter or Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter, the advertised top overall players of this year’s class. ESPN’s Jordan Reid mentioned in Friday’s article that “Wilson and Winston help the team cover its bases if Ward and Sanders are not on the board,” which is yet another indication that the Giants aren’t seriously considering matching the asking prices had by the Browns and Titans for their draft picks.
“The Giants taking a QB is much less certain now than it was a few days ago,” NFL analyst Field Yates added for the Friday piece.
None of this means that the Giants will pass on Sanders if he falls to them at the third pick. Perhaps, though, general manager Joe Schoen is among those who believe the polarizing prospect will fall into at least the teens of the upcoming player-selection process. If such a scenario played out, Schoen could get Hunter or Carter at No. 3 and then trade back up into the first round to grab Sanders or Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.
On Thursday, New York Jets reporter Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared that some view Dart “as a better prospect than” Sanders.
