    Homelessness: Trump has a point

Re: “Trump order pushes for easier forced hospitalization of homeless people” (July 25, Nation & World):

As much as I disagree broadly with President Donald Trump’s policies, there is a need to place some mentally ill people and addicts into facilities. Many people cannot take care of themselves, even in assisted housing. Leaving them on the streets is inhumane.

My late sister had schizophrenia decades ago and spent months in Western State Hospital. There were times she thought she was Jesus Christ. She broke several of my mother’s ribs once trying to get out of our house.

Too bad Jimmy Carter did not get to fund national health care clinics if he had been reelected. Instead Ronald Reagan and the states used block grants spent on other purposes. Republicans always think privatization is the answer and they are still busy trying to take health care away from vulnerable folks.

We do need larger places to house people. I would prefer funding hospitals over prison camps for immigrants.

    Georgi Krom, Seattle
